Diabetic Foot Treatment

Diabetic foot treatment is very important when you suffer from this terrible disease.  There are two main concerns when a person is dealing with diabetes and their feet.  The first is the pain associated with the condition.  This is know as diabetic neuropathy pain and is caused by the malfunctioning of the nervous system in the feet and legs caused by the affects of diabetes.

This can actually be very painful and at least uncomfortable for most people.  There is a lot of good information available for people who have pain symptoms in there extremities caused by diabetic peripheral neuropathy which means nerve damage in the feet, legs, hands, and arms caused by the result of having diabetes.

If you suffer from diabetic foot pain there is no real cure.  Just like the disease of diabetes itself you can only treat the symptoms and try and stop them from getting worse as long as possible.  Treatments vary between individuals because different people react to the drugs differently.  In fact, your doctor may prescribe more than one kind of drug to help relieve your diabetic foot pain.

Treatments range from normal pain medication to other drugs which seem to have side effects that help give relief from the pain of diabetes.  These other medications include anti-depressants and anti-convulsants.  In some people these drugs which were originally designed to treat other problems actually will help with diabetic toe pain and foot pain.

Example of Diabetes Foot Sore

The second major problem with diabetes feet is the actual sores that can be a result of the combination of poor circulation and poor nerve functioning.  As diabetes progresses many people lose feeling in their feet and thus when the are in a situation that may injure the foot or leg they don't know it.  Normally our nervous system will help to protect us by causing a retraction of the foot when it is being injured but with diabetic nerve damage the brain never receives the signal.  This mean we can actual puncture the foot or cut it and not even feel anything.

People suffering from diabetic foot problems also can not tell when there feet are being irritated.  So misfitting shoes can actually cause a sore on the foot that may go undetected until it is too late and the sore become infected.  Again the problems associated with diabetes peripheral neuropathy does not allow the patient to feel any discomfort so they don't try to alleviate the irritation.

Because of these problems it is absolutely imperative that you inspect your feet daily if you suffer from diabetes.  This is especially important if your diabetes has progressed to the point that you have symptoms of diabetic neuropathy.  These diabetes neuropathy symptoms would include such things as tingling in the feet or hands and an inability to feel a pin prick in any of the extremities.

Like the disease of diabetes itself, there is no cure for diabetic foot problems.  The only thing a person can do is try to treat the diabetes itself as much as possible which means following your doctor's order to the T and not cheating on your diet or your insulin treatments.

Diabetes foot pain and other foot problems can be treated but it is up to you to do all you can as you learn to live with the disease.  Find out all the information you possibly can about these conditions because information can go a long ways toward helping you do the right thing.
